Impressions of Spain in the 1830s

Tagged:

This is a free public exhibition on Impressions of Spain in the 1830s. In the 1830s, there was a significant surge in British interest in Spain’s landscapes, people, and monuments, despite Spain not being a traditional destination for the Grand Tour.
This exhibition highlights the works of British artists including Harriet and Richard Ford, Owen Jones, John F Lewis, David Roberts, and George Vivian, who all visited Spain during the 1830s and documented their experiences. It also acknowledges the lithographers and engravers who brought these images to a broader audience and showcases views by David Roberts’s Spanish apprentice, Genaro Pérez Villaamil.
Using original sketches, engraved plates, printed books, and even a rare fan paper, the exhibition showcases a journey through Spain as seen through the eyes of these artists and their contemporaries. The exhibits are sourced from various collections, including Professor Sir Barry Ife’s library, King’s College London’s library collections, and other private and institutional collections. Many of these items have not been publicly displayed before. Printed exhibition catalogs are available in the Weston Room for interested visitors.
